This Crataegus was very healthy. After my trip to CA, the interior leaves burned to a crisp while the tips are still healthy. I don’t really have any explanation. Can anyone tell me?

Could it be fire blight?

Not likely. Fire blight burns the tips first. On mine only the older leaves inside turned brown.

Sunscorch damage? The buds that hadn't opened before the plant was moved to full sun would be fine but leaves that were already open when it was put on the bench could have been damaged and the tree decided it didn't need those.

Also check for rodent damage. Squirrels or rats have been chomping on my trees again.

Uncle, If the tree was too dry while you were away... I think it just shed the older interior leave in favor of younger exterior leave.
