Inside vs out for Chinese Elm from LA going to Chicago?

Recently purchased a juniper for family friend from a roadside vendor in Malibu which is great. Picked up a Chinese Elm for myself to bring to Chicago. Question if I should try to convert it to be indoors for the winter or simply build a mini - pseudo greenhouse and keep it outside. I do have relatively cool spots in the house near a north facing window.

Ideally, cool south facing window indoors until spring. Grow lights would be nice, too.

Indoors in that cool spot this winter, and it will acclimate next summer and fall for winter outdoors mulched in on the ground.
