Indoor greenhouse action

Are you crazy? Growing ficus in Fairbanks, Alaska...........
I thought I was mad growing them here where winter nights get down to just under freezing.
That sounds like a great place to grow ficus, indoors, all-year round! At least you don’t have to shuffle!

One of the greatest movies of all time

If I was that far up north, I'd want to make use of those long summer days. 22 hours of sunlight sounds like it'd be killer for the right trees!

I hear summers in Alaska are quite nice actually, if you have blackout curtains.

And they absolutely are for native trees, but anything that prefers warmer temps basically goes all but dormant, it doesn’t often get above 70-75 during the summer and a lot of times in the 50-60s. I put all of my ficuses outside last summer and they basically all came to a screeching halt until fall when they went back into the grow tent. Willow, Birch, alder, and spruce do great for me.

this sounds so nice, at least for people! In the PNW, I'm very familiar with the pattern of crazy summers with remarkably long days followed by dark winters. You just have that cranked to the max!

Your statements about natives resonate with my conviction that in this game, you have to play to the local environment when it comes to species. Not necessarily that you must restrict yourself to natives, but just that you should grow something that will grow best for you. Or, like you've done, build an environment for tropicals!

Only guy I met who had lived in Fairbanks was there getting his PhD in marine biology of all things...

It would be nice to be able to do Maples, Pines, Junipers but I know they wouldnt make it, or at least wouldnt thrive, so I dont waste my time. Im still figuring out the nuances of white and black spruce.
