So I have have this Indian Hawthorn (Raphiolepis Umbellata Ovata) that I bought at a nice discount l, and I also wanted to work on bigger marerial as the plant had a very broad base.
However, it has some features that I find hard to work work with. For example, it has a 'double nebari', layered over each other.
20240602_121829.jpg20240511_123257.jpgSo I'm wondering what to do with this, and also it has a large cutwound that I could carve out to make a feature from. Or I could choose the side as a front and skip these problems altogether, but that would mean missing out on this nice big tapered base, partially.

Any input is well appreciated!

Yes, very nice taper on the side but this will not bounce back fast from that wound. let it grow and don't worry about a front.

I disagree with the advice about not worrying about a front: having a front in mind informs so many decisions with branch pruning and position that to neglect it leads to chaos. Depending on the rest of the tree, it might not be best to take the scar into account, but I know nothing about this species, so can’t say how long that scar will take to heal.

The pictures provided don’t do a lot to aid in finding a front. A better photo would be straight on, more like the second photo than the first, but with roots in view, with the rim of the pot positioned about 1/3 from the bottom of the frame. Ideally from a number of angles.

Thanks! Yeah deciding a front is hard, it's one of the reasons for posting this. Also it's really hard to capture the tree on photo's, but I made some in the meantime with different angles.

Btw it seems to backbud really reliably, especially when defoliating. The wound also heals rather quick and there'a bud forming at the edge of the large cutwound. So the tree presents lots of possibilities.

Ok so a follow up. I've done some hard pruning and bit the bullet on the styling. It was quite hard to choose a front but I'quite happy with the result.
