Does it need a drain hole or will the water just drain out the edges of the soil?

I'm sure there is more than one way to do it but I watched a cool video showing how they mounted on a slab and they first drilled holes for the wire and drilled drain holes. Couldn't find the video. They then mixed up a clayish type of paste and used it to make up a dam like rim that held in the soil. Kind of hard to describe.

Muck is the term for that stuff, lots of recipes on the Internet to make it. I personally use caliche clay from the ground here and shredded sphagnum moss in a 50/50 ratio.

Mike.

The bottom of my baskets have NO holes and they drain fine.

You could probly get away with no holes but I would leave it at a tilt.

Drain holes or not, a very fine spray would be necessary to not erode the Muck, for which, I prefer the term "bonsai sausage".

I would use a recipe that locals use.

muck: Keto and akadama-powder 50/50. Ad water until you can make balls.
