I picked up this juniper at a nursery a few weeks ago. Cleaned it out a little, but really haven't done too much with it. What are your guys thoughts on doing something like this? Also, do I need to wait until summer dormancy, or late fall to cut branches and jin them?

I also plan to wire down all the top branches too, but don't know how long I should wait after the jinning to do that.

Thanks!

During most of the growing season, the bark will slip off the wood pretty easily. So, until Sep/Oct is a good time to make jins. You can wire anytime, but it is easier to do when the bark won't slip. So, maybe wait until your fall/winter to do that.

Thought I'd post an update to this, just to archive the progress. Fair warning I'm pretty new to wiring, styling and really bonsai in general. But this is a starting point for the tree.

The foliage is so leggy and sparse and a lot of it looked old and unhealthy, so I didn't really want to cut off that much. Left a lot of downward facing needles, etc.

After making the deadwood.

Anyways, like I said, at least it's a start. Hoping to get it healthy next summer and try to begin developing some pads.

Here's an update, Just making my way through all the repots I have to do. Did a half bare root and put it into something I had. Ignore the creepy black glove, hah.

Need to prune this back and wire it out this out soon. IMG_20180228_214637.jpg

You can have something pretty out of your tree after some years!
I repeat what RobertB said above.
