Got this ficus microcarpa (tiger bark) I've been working on for about a year and a half or so. Trunk is about 5-6cm (little over 2 inch) in diameter, 30cm-12inch tall. Tree is healthy and is already growing well (currently indoors, no artificial lighting). Repotted last year, it sits in a training size teraccotta pot in 100% inorganic soil. I've also placed two root grafts in late summer/early fall to improve the currently mediocre nebari.

Unfortunately the thread grafted lowest branch died off, which was essential to its design. Considering the many flaws, as well as large wounds to heal/callous over higher up the trunk I'm leaning towards starting over again.

Question is, how low can you (safely) chop?

I'm currently thinking about 2-3cm (1 inch) above the nebari to create a multi trunk or clump style, depending on how many buds nature gifts me. Don't know if that's too low for it to survive though.

If I do go ahead with the chop, I intend to chop in late spring/early summer btw, once it's growing vigorously

I wouldn't hesitate to chop a healthy Microcarpa of any sort if it's healthy and it is growing season. Sounds like you've got a good plan to me. Do you have a picture?
