I repotted a JBP that I got halfheartedly as a guarantee replacement for a dead one.

The one I ..originally ...got was kinda nice. The replacement even worse than "meh."
But I've kept it in a deep pot with dumb care and not caring what happened to it and this year decided to just whack the soil off and jam it in a smaller pot.
Well.....so far it's still alive. Even after jinning the ugly thing and wiring it into SOME sort of whatever.

Been 2 weeks since that. Budding and not wilting. But pines can sneak up on ya.

How long would be MAX time it could masquerade as being alive and well?

Well . . . it's not a pine, of course, but my 2014 Christmas tree is still sitting out in the woods looking fresh and green.

Well.....thats a new one....someone asking about how to kill a tree instead of save it..lol.

If you dont want the tree, give it away at your bonsai club if youre a mamber of one, or put it up on ebay, or just toss it I suppose.

I would think 2 weeks far to early to notice any signs...though I know nothing of pines. But as Jim mentioned they can hold their green for some time. (I know junipers can go months looking healthy holding onto their green)

Haha, I had the same question in mind when I chopped the top off of a black pine recently.

I took the top and stuck it in a pot with some damp soil. It's far to big to root as a cutting, but think more like cut flowers or an Xmas tree - the original tree being green means nothing as long as it's severed head is still green too! It seems like a handy indicator.

A month later the cut part is still light green, but getting more yellowish, with a few brown needles. The tree itself is still a beautiful vibrant green; the more different they get, the more confident I am that the tree is still healthy.

At this point, the best indicator is the elongation of new buds into candles, rather than watching the deterioration of the current needles. Leave it in good sun, and don't move the pot around at all.

When new candles open, you're likely in the clear. Without a photo, I'd err on the side of not candle-pruning this year.

Paradox if you read the OP he was not asking "how to kill" his pine rather how long it would be until he could see the signs if he did kill his pine.
