I took home a free yard JM today and need to prune a few branches to get it in my car. I have a good wind and shade structure on my property where I put most of my cuttings. I’m wondering how big cuttings can be and still have odds of survival.

Depending on variety of maple and it's rooting ability 1/4" or larger with appropriate aftercare. I've heard at least one person say they've rooted a 1" cutting...

I find match thickness is best for Japanese maple. Bigger and successrates drop enourmously for me.

Nothing to lose, try the big ones too this way let's see what you get!

Nevermind the wind and shade structure tho, get these in a propagator for best results, I use a makeshift one of 2 clear plastic boxes on on top of the other when the cuttings get too tall for my normal propagators

Good luck! Hope to see some successes soon!
