Greetings,

I was wondering if someone could speak to the level of where they believe this Korean Hornbeam is? I’ve done everything I thought I could do to keep it lush and green but it seems to not be working.

Hmmm, can you provide some details of your care routine, watering frequency, soil mix, hours of light /shade and wind patterns? Also would be helpful to know how you protected during winter? Any recent repots?

Beginners always take photos of the foliage. Which helps with advice a little. Photos of the entire tree as well as the pot and soil are more important. The soil is the usual starting point for issues

Please provide a photo of the soil so we can see drainage etc

Equally important is care history. When was the tree repotted. Is thi location where it stays? What are you watering habits? What is the sun exposure — how long in the sun each day? Afternoon or morning sun? Etc. any details help. We can’t answer your question as it stand as it depends on numerous factors

It is from a program I’ve been involved with for the last few months. Initially potted up we repotted into a bonsai standard mix.

In my personal care I’ve been watering as soon as I can feel the soil is just a little dry with my fingernail, until water seeps through the bottom.

All of the bonsai are outside on a 2nd floor balcony which the third floor balcony and roof cause to give them the best sun during the morning.

So did it start to bud out and then stalled? Looks like leaves were coming out but then got dried, fried or wind dehydrated it or was there a cold snap in your area?

There was one but it was before I took it home, I believe. Is it too late?

At repotting did you leave old soil on the root mass?

If this were mine I’d pull it out of the pot, purge the old soil and replant with new better draining soil worked into the roots. Thats an aggressive approach though.

I believe there is a strong possibility that I left it outside during a night cold snap. We try to keep them between 40-82 right?

Is this tree salvageable?

I'd say there is a 50-50 shot of it rebounding. Trees use stored sugars and carbohydrates to survive cold temperatures, they use those same forms of energy to grow. Once they use them for growth, they are significantly less tolerant of freezing temperatures, not to mention they have to still have enough energy to push new growth again.

I wouldn't give up on it quite yet though.
