Had this little guy for a year in its glazed teal pot, didn't skip a beat last season.
Originally it was a tiny bush that you couldn't see into at all.
Like this....I think this was, day of purchase, before cleaning dead stuff out.

So, I kinda got board and decided to put some wire on it....
Its ugly, I warn you....
Also my first time using properly annealed copper.....I like....
Before: sorry for some blurriness...

I hope I didn't kill it, due to the fact that I was a little abusive to the tree during this wiring....
I noticed, near the end, that it seemed kind of loose in its pot, so you see the hold down wires.

I think it's doing its job except here.

I'd leave it now so to not jostle it anymore.

But eventually get a smaller diamter wire better on that red...
And a smaller one still on that yellow...
And you can compact that more..

Maybe even look to rid yourself of all but one of that first whorl, and grow it some.
Wonder what @Vance Wood says.

Nice.

Yeah, when I realized that I was being a little rough with it, I just stopped.
Wanted to write more, but that'll do for now.
It kinda only has one whorl of branches, I'll take a closer pic.
The way I bent it, makes it look like a lower whorl.

Take a gander... kind of a 3/4 branch knuckle.
It's almost acceptable, but I think eventually, I might get rid of 2 more branches.
I'll be watching for swelling in that knuckle...

Pull back with the focal length and let's see the rest of the tree in relation to everything else. By the way; did you cut the length of the needles? That really is not necessary. Over a short time Mugos reduce needle length all by themselves. Cutting needles is a useless technique with Mugo Pines.

I did not cut the needles....lemme get a scale reference pic for you...uno momento.

Basically, if it does survive the torture I gave it, I hope for back budding and want to reduce it more... create the smallest tree I can.

Concentrate on branches from the first swirl if you don't get some back budding below that spot in which case you need to encourage those and use one or more of them. You are not talking about a short term project this will take about four years if the tree starts to prosper. I asked about the needles being clipped because of the appearance of the growth in this photo, they looked clipped.

Here are two little Mugo's that I have 3 yrs invested in training, I have small amount of wiring on both to get more flattening out, they are somewhat dense, I don't want the radical pruning on them, I am waiting to see what turns out, one is 5" from soil with a 5" width of foliage, the other is 4" from soil with 4" of foilage...

*Not trying to highjack your thread just showing an example of small Mugos with ongoing training and BTW I am guilty of clipping the needles to obtain what I think is a more neat and uniform look...

I get a lot of enjoyment in viewing them as small Mugo's & watching them grow, I water once a day, twice a day in hot summer & I fertilize with Miracle-Gro 24-8-16 diluted in water every 3 weeks April thru November...

Hopefully I will be Styling Training a much, much larger Mugo this Spring...

Nice! I like em!

Here are a couple of Shohin Mugos both about 9 inches tall. I do not cut the needles except to remove them. Over time they get small by themselves.View attachment 130943View attachment 130944
Those really are beautiful Vance, but I assure you that I never, nor would I ever cut the needles on a pine tree.
