After a failed attempt earlier in with Hinoki cypress , always wanted to find a tall old trunk that could be styled as a bunjin , alpine style. I found this Hinoki today at an older nursery that had a few good hinokis grown by cutting . This is a wells select cultivar . Bob had Suthin at the studio for a visiting artist workshop , later on in the day he carved out some time for his crew to work with Suthin on a tree. 8B2C315F-5C68-4D9A-A17B-93D601F1D85E.jpeg
Here is end result, will sit in shaded area with most until I see new growth. Pretty happy with initial design.

I’m going to name this the little Hinoki that could.. because this other customer leaving the morning class laughed at the tree and called it s beanpole .. he wasn’t laughing when I started working on it

Don’t apologize! Gotta show these things in the best way possible! Also, a little unsolicited advice. Wire those Jin in the lower trunk down, so they harden that way. Seeing them grow up is counter productive to the image, with all of the living stuff pulled down.

Yeah!!! About that I was leaning toward a shallow rectangle or a round literati pot but alas … it may need a season or 2 in a training pot due to size of root ball
You’d be surprised. But I’d also err on the side of caution.

Read this article James. I treated my Hinoki almost exactly as suggested. Bare rooted and all.

Looking healthy for sure bro. How does the growth seem at the tips? While I know it’s in development, you’re still gonna want to give it a few trims to keep the foliage close to the trunk.
It’s good I did trim today and a jelly I’ve been pinching it at the tips

Nice looking tree. Do you have a before -photo of the tree before the workshop? Curious to see. How much foliage did you remove do you estimate?
