Hinoki Cypress, is it a cascade style?

I have had this tree a year and a half. I repotted it last spring and took it to my club last month to get tips on how to style it. Did I ever. This is how it turned out.

Once the wire is off, I'll start work on refining the jins. Any suggestions for a pot? I am thinking a reddish brown medium deep drum with soft edges.

It is not a cascade. The definition of a cascade according to the books is a tree that falls below the rim of the pot. This is more of a Yamadori style, and I like it.

@Vance Wood Yea, I understood what a cascade is, I just couldn't find a style that fits it and if it grew a few inches in the same direction.... I somehow ever equated yamadori to a style. Thank you for learning me.

The Japanese, according to what I have read, have designated the Yamadori Style to Yamadori trees that cannot be reconciled into any other recognized by the books style.

When you put it like that, I do recall reading that. I guess never having any yamadori style material, I never retained the information. Now it is locked away with other gems such as do not wire a tree ten minutes after repotting it, to never be forgotten by me ever again. I appreciate the info.

You are quite welcome. Cautionary warning: You seem to have some talent and promise be careful that you do not allow your opinion of yorself to close off your mind to ideas from other people. I have seen this claim victims as they think they know it all but in fact don't. Then the day comes when failure becomes self evident, and hubris rules the day. I don't mean to suggest that this is you but this is a warning given to all who have an ear to hear and a soul to listen.

By the way: Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the NET, you posted: do not wire a tree ten minutes after repotting it. This is not true either but a subject for another time and plsce.

Isn't there a sub style called a literati cascade where the single branched canopy falls below the rising trunk?? If there is, this is it.

There is no reason to argue the point but though it occupies many of the traits to fill your parameters the trunk is too fat and the foliage is too well defined to qualify as a Literati. IMHO

That is very good advice.

I would not say I have talent in creating bonsai, this tree was closer to painting by numbers with someone helping choose the colors then creating something original. I do try and take others opinions with an open mind. I like to think I am able to see when someone has a superior idea to mine. On the other hand, I am only human, sadly failure is just a powerful teacher as success, often more so.

I would agree with that concept on Junipers I have however done everything short of turning them over to Delta Airlines in a dispute about a seat with Mugo Pines. You can do a lot with trees if you balance out the trauma top and bottom. I am aware that there are some that will argue this.

I'm well past that stage in this hobby. And just to be sure I wouldn't relapse when I had one beer to many, bought 65 trees last fall. Half are limbless stock, but the rest are in various stages of development right up to just needing wire. I repotted 67 trees in April spending 49 hours doing so. I don't have the energy to be over enthusiastic LOL!
