Help with repotting

Hey Guys!
I got my bonsai about 6 months ago and yesterday it’s pot broke, recently the soil has started to come away from the edges and I was told that I needed to soak it for 5 minutes and then drain.

It looks like it possibly needs repotting, I have ordered a slightly bigger pot for it but need advice as to what to do when it arrives. Do I repot it completely ie: remove most of its soil and trim roots and use new soil, or do I add new soil to the existing soil to fill the new pot?

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks guys!

Welcome to Crazy!

I was just making fun of another person for their name as it relates to Bonsai so don't take this the wrong way.....

Spouse, "what did you buy at the store?"

You, "some crayons, a soccer ball, Anna Bonsai!"
😆🤔🙅

We're going to need more information.

Your location, some history on the plant.
It's location (inside?)

Sure looks like you can afford to get it in some fresh soil.

But depending on it's history and your days before Frost....repotting may not be smart.

Location is London! And it lives inside! The soil isn’t looking great, it’s cracking etc even when it’s watered!

Hi,
Bonsai live outside, apart from tropical species.
Repot? Wait til Spring be my thinking 👍

You have done very well keeping this Chinese elm alive and even healthy inside for 6 months. They normally go backwards indoors.
Chinese elm are pretty resilient and can be repotted most of the year in mild climates but I prefer to do extensive root work early in spring if possible. I'd feel more comfortable just slip otting this into a slightly larger pot for now and then doing a proper root prune and replace the potting mix in spring.
