Chinese or japanese privet? Ligustrum.

I would hazard a guess that it is a Bougainvillea, a tropical, woody vine, originally from South America, Brazil in particular. The like a lot of sun, full sun is okay. They want to go from wet to just about, but not quite dry, then get watered again. If the leaves wilt, it is too dry by 24 hours. Don't use a watering can, take the plant to the kitchen or other sink, and flood the pot with water. Allow to drain then return to window sill.

Many keep these as outdoor in the summer, inside for the cold winter, type bonsai. Beautiful flowers a couple times a year.

What to do, Start reading. In the Resources section of the New to Bonsai Forum. Also read the threads on Bougainvillea in other forums. Other than keep it watered and give it light there is nothing that needs to be done "now". So you have time to read up on Bougainvillea and on Bonsai.

Even if my guess as to identity were wrong, ant it were a privet, you would still need to do the same, read up, keep it watered, and give it light. No rush to prune or do any repotting or anything else. First gather information.

Is that a flower? Very cool man, I hope he survives your learning curve ;) Welcome to the forum.

Welcome! It will help a great deal to have a clear picture of the leaves so we can see margins, veins etc. Also, if that is a flower take a good picture of that as it may at least rule some things out. Also if we are going to help you, we need to know where you live and where you are attempting to grow this. So update your profile with your location and describe the plant's current growing conditions. Also take a good clear picture of the soil. That is a common issue with new folk.
