Collected American Hornbeam 2. This makes 5 American hornbeam bonsai projects for yours truly. And 7th Hornbeam overall.. This one wasn’t collected by me but it’s hailing from the down south. Ordering shade netting this week no more f-ing around. I’m addicted to Hornbeams, especially natives species over all. Collecting Pitch Pine in a couple weeks soon as location up north is above freezing.

That’s a nice one! I have that same problem too. There’s so many around here it’s hard not to collect them.

Count me in that boat as well, my first collected tree was a hornbeam. They are awesome, other than maples I want to stay native. So far I only have 9, and that’s only because remodeling a bathroom got it the way of collecting more this spring.

Used wire to tie lower left branch down a bit. Buddy tape wrapped around where wire is so it doesn’t cut in. There is a long branch I will approach grafting with to seal the wound in the back quicker. Till then it’s flushed out , will let it grow out this season, maybe cut back a bit but needs to develop branches , just want them to be in good positions while they’re still pliable, except for top, that needs to grow. I’m setting up shade netting this week in preparation for warmer weather as May approaches. All my hornbeams and understory trees will be underneath.

Where I live in North Carolina we are known for wild temperature swings, late frosts and just all around crack head weather. It never fails, all the trees put on nice new pretty spring growth and blooms and then wham…. Late frost zaps em. The hornbeams around here generally respond well to those late frosts so I’m thinking yours will be just fine too. It may sulk for a week or two but it should be back to the races before you know it.

Everything's gonna be ok!! Went through this last year. My hoop house got extremely hot during a early spring-ish almost 2 weeks. Buds on hornbeam popped and began to leaf out. Frost came back killed majority of foliage. 3 weeks into actual spring weather trees were covered in new growth

Need to take a better pic but it’s cool now , getting full sun . Dumping photos as I’m maxing out of space on my phone , pictures of my dog and baby niece need to be occupying more space on my phone

You know you have a problem when tree pictures outnumber family and pet pictures on your phone 😂

Had to dump screen shorted memes on my computer , and bonsai will be the same eventually to keep a record here and on computer.. but yes family , friends and dog Pete are always a priority riiiight in front of der trees

Last cut back for growing season. Keeping the bottom left long to grow the branch, cut back the upper branches except top to grow in order to heal the cut wound on back side of tree F3BF3E6F-BA7E-42AA-935B-F64F30FCD647.jpeg

Looking good, how many times have you pruned this year?
2x, first time was to remove the damaged leaves on May 4 , I also cut some leaves in half to allow more backbudding a few weeks ago. So unless this explodes again in 6-8 weeks I won’t touch again.. we’ll see how unruly the top gets.

Same here, twice already and I see a third coming. I guess that’s why I have read that the ramification can happen fairly quick because they push growth until fall.
