Hello, I need help.

Well if you enjoy bonsai, or even the concept of it, I would recommend you go out to a genuine bonsai nursery, see what they have, and buy a few more trees. The reason why I say this is (1) you live in ground zero for some of the best bonsai nurseries in the country and (2) it is inevitable that you will kill some trees - everyone does. It is much better to start with a number of trees so you can spread your care over several, because you have to learn when to work on a tree, and when to let it rest... sometimes for 6 months or more. It is easier to let one tree rest when you have others to work on...
 
The tree seems to be developing that extra growth you said it would- after it formed new roots. I know it hasn't been a year since I received it, but I'd like to know if it's alright for me to separate the cuttings yet.

I plan to remove that weed (or perhaps I won't need to worry, after I transplant it...?).
