Came across this half dead redwood at home depot… Did not see any signs of beetle damage or fungus on the dead stuff… dehydration maybe?
Lots of new growth pushing below so it’s not completely dead... however, store will not sell such trees at a discount (they technically don’t own the tree), misfits go back to the vendors to be discarded.

Coast redwood will throw buds from compromised trunks. I have even seen new growth emerging from the trunks of fallen (dead) trees.

I wouldn't buy the tree unless it was offered at a discount, because if you are being forced to pay full price you might as well get a healthy one!

Oh yeah, redwoods are very resilient trees. Seeing the healthy green growth shooting from the trunk gave me some hope the tree could be saved. If it could be had at a discount, why not?
The search for something decent to work with continues.

Yikes! Well redwood doesn't tend to have issues with insects (according to my research at least) but given the size of the tree and the pot I think it's probably root bound as redwoods like to spread out not going insanely deep into the soil (full grown only about 12 ft deep with approx 300 ft hight) they also like high humidity given your in cali you probably know this,

Think it needs a repot, some heavy misting and just for safety id end up cutting it back severely to a couple of the older dry branches,

Definitely would not purchase seems like a Huge money pit and I don't see the tree being any good for bonsai maybe using it for propagation but I think it would be a net loss overall
