Growing some JBP

I had intentions to start from seed in Spring 2019,but I thought I would try to get a jump start.
I acquired 5 seedling from Julian Adams.
They will grow good hopefully.I wired them as low as I could,but they are three year seedlings and I did not want to over do it.
I also have some Kotobuki from Brent on the way hopefully.Maybe can try grafting Kotobuki onto these in the future.
Grafting will be in order nonetheless.
I am still going to plant seed in Spring
I slip potted into a bigger pot for now.

These coco mats come in handy when using coarse bonsai soil.

You can get it in bulk rolls then just cut to shape.

Super smart, I have used that mat too. I used it to keep squirrels away but holding soil is next level

You might want to try and get the bend closer to the soil line. You will be very thankful you did later on down the road. See bonsai tonight get tutorial

Cmeg, besides wiring, are you doing any other work on them this year? Will you start to decandled and pull needles and the like or is the plan just to grow for a few years? I too got 5 from Julian last month and decandled, which I'm not sure was a good idea right off the bat. Thinking of wiring soon before they get too bulky.

Best to let a sacrifice leader grow awhile before you start training side branches

Made the grow bed for Pines

Found the most well lit area In the yard and built my Pine grow bed.I cannot have a vast amount ,beings I harvest rainwater,but can have quite a few.
Will grow in pots and probably over winter in a bed of peatmoss for winter when they get too large for the cold frame.
Going to make more from seed too,and hopefully get a couple month early start with seedling cuttings in a propogator under lights

Very nice!
I would do much more bending in the lower part, so that you can have a better trunk line later on. In my experience, the more I bend in the lower part when seedling is about 3 years old, the more appealing trunk line I would get later on.

The JBPs i got from Adam were already pretty stiff at 3 yrs old. I got more or less what you managed on the wiring, cmeg. I think I'll be trying from seeds this spring myself.

If you wish to work with pines and have success with wiring i suggest you invest in copper wire. Aluminum wire does not work well with conifers.

Can’t beat Evergreen Gardenworks for corkbark pine grafts.
Got a couple Akame to grow out.
Had to have a couple.This Akame seems very vigorous.
That shoot is a foot-long on that second picture.

Seedling Pines

My seedlings are sprouting under the grow light!
These are the first to pop up and there are more on the way it seems.
I decided to just let these grow and not make seedling cuttings.
I will uproot them early and put in small 2”-3” Rootpouch containers.I’ve read these are good pouches for branching out roots. https://www.greenhousemegastore.com...nth?returnurl=/containers-trays/bags-pouches/
The light is about 20” away,but I believe I can put it much closer once they start growing for some real intense light I think the pines will appreciate.
The Quantum Board is actually a white,full spectrum LED grow light that is really bright,but not a lot of heat.For some reason my phone dims the brightness to a yellow color.
I have a fan that is plugged into a short cycle timer that is on for 30 minutes and off for 10 minutes.Pointed just over the seedlings for moving air.

Add another wire that runs in between the spiral you have already made. Not touching the existing wire, but midway between. A “double helix”.
