When growing pre bonsai(in this case cuttings or seedlings) stock in pots, what do you do differently from material grown in the ground?
Put them in pots.
One of those Jimmy pots.......Fallon
You don't want to start out by putting them in too big of a pot right away. Like a quart size first then a Fallon then a 3 gallon and so on. Also you can use something like compost mixed with bark for growing them in pots. No need for expensive substrate at this time.
