Growing pre bonsai in pots.

You don't want to start out by putting them in too big of a pot right away. Like a quart size first then a Fallon then a 3 gallon and so on. Also you can use something like compost mixed with bark for growing them in pots. No need for expensive substrate at this time.

This may be where I've gone wrong. I planted all of my cuttings in ground up mint condition star wars dolls. It cost me 114,000 dollars.

This is very interesting topic. Being a balcony bonsaist, I grow the most of my trees in pot, not using too oversized pots but one size bigger at least. It helps letting them grow without root disturbance for a longer time.

Some people say their development, thickening... will take much more time. I cannot compare it, so far I've been growing some pre-bonsai in ground for two years (starting the second season to be precise) and they might start their faster development this or next season. Who knows.

The trees grown in the pots show the sighns of growth, thickening and aging, but probably slower. I know e.g. Bill Valavanis grow trees in pots/containers, deciduous but his RAF scots pine as well. I hope more people will add their experiences.

At least you ground up some Lame!

Set them on a table to view them, rather than lay down.

Blah. The three of us know the best soil isn't expensive!

F bark.

I'd want the healthiest roots I can get no matter what.
And same watering.
And F Bark.

It's easier to pick weeds out of 8822.

If you're growing out a bunch of trees bark and compost are the cheapest, easiest ingredients to pick up anywhere.
Even 8822 gets expensive when you start filling 3 and 5 gallon buckets with it.

F Bark!

Fuzzy Lichens......mmmm.

I just will never get over the amount of good feeder roots you lose to a piece of bark.

There is nothing I hate more than a chunk of bark or 30 still clinging to a good bunch of roots....

Don't ask me why.....

I just am more anti bark than anything right now.

Fark.

A new word for the bonsai vocabulary!
I don't have bark either. My company buys 8822 by the pallet. If I had to buy it all I would be screwed. I would be using compost and bark.
As it is now if you piled all of the DE I have in use out in my yard in one spot it would be a small dump truck load.

A new word

Kind of makes me think.....

If the Ark was real....

It would've tipped over from all the humping too!

"The air was thick with the smell of semen"
