Hi guys.

My first attemp to groundlayer a acer wasn't a succes. It didn't get great radial growth.

Unfortunately I did not take a photo of the problem.
But it have only developed roots part way round the cut.
What can I do to get radial roots? Perhaps expose the cambium layer, the places with no roots?

Thank you.

You should try to diagnose what went wrong with the first attempt. It's hard to even make guesses without a good look at the whole tree and knowing if there was anything you did or did not do when starting the original layer.

Try recutting the problem area and give it another go.
Chopping the new layer off and potting it will usually make the bare area root too but occasionally the unrooted side can die back a bit.

From what I've seen with horizontal air layers, roots preferentially form on the lower side. So you might consider temporarily potting it at an angle with that unrooted side is lower than the rooted side. This ought to encourage root development at the lower point.

FYI the bare areas has formed callus but not rooted yet. I think the air layer was too wet for too long.

If you already have callus it is almost certain roots will develop after the layer is separated. Nothing like cutting the umbilical cord to encourage it to grow some more roots and become self reliant.
