I've taken quite a few bald cypress from the surrounding swamps over the last 6 years and I figured I'd replace them. Over this fall and winter I sprouted 20 or so cypress seedlings from collected cypress cones. They were getting quite tall and I figured they could fend for themselves in the swamp. I planted them a couple of inches above the current high water conditions. When the swamp goes down, they'll be in about the perfect enviornment........wet feet and damp, rich topsoil from there up. I also planted 3 or 4 scarlet oak seedlings in a slightly higher location.

I didn't realize it until I looked at the pic at home, but there's probably a half dozen poential future cypress bonsai candidates in the background.

I'm going to do that again next year. It's easy to collect pounds of the cypress cones. They'll sprout in almost any old compost/aggregate mix.

Nice job. When I suggested doing this with cannabis many years ago (really, many years ago) I ran into a lot of resistance. ;)
