I didn't get these, needed a different vehicle, but would you consider trying to save either, both of these? Free, probably. The foliage is browned in places, doesn't feel dead tho, and the trunks are massive at the base. They think the Browning is related to high iron content in drip irrigation they were under, spendiing winters outside. Smell like cat piss, should narrow variety a little. Maybe a chance you graft foliage... Debating going back this weekend - silly? Garden center closing for good this winter, clearing stock.

Why not, I love garden center finds. What can you loose? You can surely do something with this and create loads of shari.

I was a little overwhelmed by their size, would need to put the seats down, lay on their sides, and I had stuff in the back already... Maybe another field trip Sunday, wife seems behind the project, was not expecting that...

I would go for it, even tho they might be too far gone.
Perhaps take one and put it in the ground, take another and aggressively cut it back.
See how you do. I guess that’s what I’d do. 🤣

What are the temperatures in your area? Could be that the golden glow they have is temperature related and that you're looking at healthy plants.
I know some pfizer/media cultivars do the golden shine just like shimpaku.

We have definitely had cold, a freeze here-I'm thinking at least some of that is bronzing, the needles definitely didn't feel crunchy... I'm thinking of getting them today, maybe giving there my Sumo root elixir and tucking them away till spring.....

Hard pass. A weak tree is a sick tree which is a magnet for disease/pests, which I wouldn't want around the rest of my trees. I wouldn't take these if they were free. I've got too many projects that are being rebuilt already, and they were healthy when I took them on.

Yeah, kind of why I would stick em in the ground and forget about it. If It can rejuvenate itself there, we’ll maybe a few years down the line You have something.

They're in the side yard now, will get some mulch on the pots next. Any suggestions, sulfur, Neem, etc, anything you'd do while they "chill"?

I'd let them be "rescued" by the next real estate agent who would buy them to "stage" a dumpy house.

Fertilizer and that's it.
Spider mites will die in the cold, and you'll clean the bark whenever you're bored anyways. So spraying with something wouldn't make a whole lot of difference.
