Here's an unusual amur maple I potted up recently. I threw it in a Sarah Rayner pot I got from the Midwest Bonsai Show. I airlayed it about 1.5 years ago. Interestingly it came from the apex of a old tree. For many years the tree was probably pruned at same site repetitively. The generation of new buds and branches from the same spot resulted in an unsightly bulge on the top of the tree. When I saw it though I thought killer shohin! It's a pretty chunky base, maybe 2.5-3 inches? To think it was the apex of a tree!
I probably will just keep this as the base for grafting material and look to replace all the old leggy branches. But for now I just enjoy it as a funky looking tree on my bench haha.
