Ugh......#!@$×€*

FYI. Frost advisory tonight for parts of Long Island, NY and CT.

Protect your sensitive trees.

Question: anyone think pines with extending buds with the needle scales should also be protected?

When / where is this for? Checking Weather Channel and not seeing it, also looks like forecasted lows aren't dipping too far below 40° here in Rockland County. Might be lucky it's not localized here, but will keep an eye on things.
Thanks for the heads up.
Good luck.

There has been some research that suggests Pines "could" be less cold tolerant when they have lived through a few mild Winters. Nothing in stone but honest an overnight frost "could" make the buds look a bit ugly but I don't "think" it would damage them as the ground is pretty warm and the day temperatures should be at least 25 - 35 F higher. When in doubt though they have really inexpensive "plankets"(blanket for plants) at Agway and other suppliers. It saves you moving them a couple of times;)

I use the National Weather Service website where you put your zip code in. The advisory covers eastern L.I., Passaic, Orange, Putnam, Westchester in NY and Fairfield, Middlesex, New London in CT right now.

28 here this morning, just another cold morning in a long cold spring. All the deciduous trees were brought in and most will stay in as tonight may be as cold and I'm getting tired of carting things around. Conifers are all outside. Pines buds are just starting to push so no concern for those.

At this point....

I wonder if it ain't easier to grab an extension cord and put a fan on em....

Like they do in Cali.

Easier than dragging shit BACK in.

With freezes like this your own micro climate can make a big difference. It was 37 degrees at my place this morning and 32-33 just a few miles north.

Frost only occurs when the temperature of the ground (or top of your car or whatever) gets down to 32 or lower. Standard air temperature measurements are taken in a shelter at about 6' above the ground. So yes, you can easily get frost when the "official" air temp is above freezing (cold air is denser and settles to the lower spots). So you could have frost, but your trees could be fine if they are on tables several feet above the ground.

This is why it is crucial to be familiar with the details of the weather in your growing area. Use min/max thermometers to track temps exactly where you keep your trees. You might be surprised. The other night the temp at my weather station (6' high) got down to 30 but the temp on my lower benches (about 2-3' high) was 27. That can make a big difference.

Doing the "dance" one more time. Hopefully this is it for the season until next autumn.

Thanks for the heads up.

Welcome

Yea, left work early to take care of it. My back hurts already and I haven't even started yet....

Thank God the dance is over for me this spring. It was 90 here on Monday. Low 50s tonight. No heavy lifting in sight. hang in there!

Getting the same cold nights here, but I know you all think we are in the hinterlands up here!;)

All trees either in the garage, in the cold frame or under a tarp. I hope its the last time

Yeah youre fine up west. Predicted lows tonight are 28 here. The frost advisory is only for the east end.

Last night went down to 40F here but they are forecasting low to mid 40's for an entire week at night. Looks like the indoor stuff will be staying in yet another week. The plants outside are all looking good so far. Some even better with the cooler nights...
