I know, fraxinus can be frustrating. But I got this multitrunk guy (4 inch base) from a neoghboring hiuse about to be tore down. I got it back in March, and could not get a lot of roots as they were mostly growing under a concrete patio. For months I thought this guy was dead, but I kept watering it. A few weeks ago, he had several days of almost non-stop rain. Very unusual here, but I guess the high humidity really helped this guy, who is now sprouting all over.

There is the fraxinus anomala, or dwarf ash, that's native to Colorado and doesn't have the compound leaves.
This doesn't look like it, but you might it a try some time. I occasionally find them around here.

Thanks, @ShadyStump. I am almost sure this is either F. americana or (more likely) F. pennsylvanica.

The tree was growing well and I left for a 3-week vacation. As it never happens, it rained literally evey day during those weeks. As a result, all my deciduous got anthracnose and were in a pitiful state when I came back. After a complete defoliatjon and weekly applications of cupper-based fungicide, they are all coming back. This guy in particular cambe back with a vengeance!

when I dug that one out, anothet tree was growing tangled with it. I also improved taper and wired it. It is not much to look at, but it is now on a clear path at least.

This Ash just popped a bud exactly whetr I needed it. Of it hadnt, I would have had to try an approach graft to save that trunk

Ha! Epic timing!
I literally just now checked on the anomalas I collected a couple weeks ago, and took a pic.

This one is budding out, and seems to be doing great. The other one I'm still waiting on.
