A friend gave me this Burning Bush seedling he dug up from his back yard in the spring of 2020.

I believe pruning for more ramification in the coming weeks will be in order. So many little shoots and back budding happening already. I’ll be busy with this guy for a while.

Nice work. Burning bush is an interesting subject when you grow it like a tree. I repot yearly and can cut back the roots hard. They always fill the pot. Definitely a hardy species.

I only ever pruned after the leaves have dropped. Either late fall or early spring. Then I’d let it grow throughout the summer.
Now however I’ll be pruning for ramification and style. I feel I have the basic shape set now so I won’t be letting all the branches get long anymore.

Keep in mind burning bush is a single flush tree so dont cut too much off during the growing season
Thank you Paradox. Yes I'm aware of that. There are so many back buds popping up all over the tree, I'm going to have to keep a close eye on it....and perhaps use a lot of wire.

Really enjoyed seeing your progression pics, especially love seeing 4 years.

I’m enjoying learning with this species too, I’ve been able to get a second flush of growth when pushing for ramification, this is one year of clipping new growth back to two leaves

Thanks bcragun!

From what I’ve been reading, you’re fortunate to get a second flush. I wonder if it has anything to do with timing? How soon after it leafed out did you defoliate?

A squirrel decided to chew the bark off of one side of my tree a couple years ago. When I dug it up last spring I discovered there were no roots whatsoever on one side of the tree. IMG_4943.jpeg
The only option was to attempt an air layer. It’s been over two months now I’ve only seen one tiny root.
So I’ve taken it of and replaced it with fresh sphagnum moss soaked in rooting hormone gel, another scraping of the cambium and fresh dressing. I’ll leave it on over the winter.
My question is when I put it in the ground for the winter should I bury the air layer as well?
