So as the title says, I attempted my first repot!

It was... Interesting? Hopefully the photos show the events of this process. Definitely found it pretty difficult!

The roots were hard work to say the least. Tried to do the board method, no idea how worthwhile my efforts were. Roots are none existent on one side, made a few cuts at that side, hoping that may encourage some to grow? If not, I will have to tackle that when I have more experience!

Any feedback would be really useful, I really did try my best 😂

With good soil, healthy trees and patience... it’s actually ASTOUNDING how “different” that root ball/pad will LOOK the next time you see it..

🤓

Good job. Now.. important.. Do NOT overwater. And -unless the tree is much better wired in than it looks, be VERY carefull with the tree moving about in the pot. It can take a few months before the roots have taken good hold. So untill mid-spring there is a risk of young roots breaking if the tree gets bumped.

This is a Chinese elm. Very resilient and will grow back quickly from almost no roots so a great choice to start your root pruning with. Chances of new roots forming from the buried cuts is quite high so good luck.

I'll make sure to watch the watering - thanks! Yeah the wiring in could definitely be better, but it's actually more stable than it looks. Will be careful with it though 👍🏻

Yeah I've been following the broom elm thread by @markyscott and seen others with siginifacnt root prunes, so I'm hoping this one will be fine. Good to hear about the new roots, was hoping that would be the case. All in all I think it could have gone a lot worse! But we shall see 👍🏻

A healthy Chinese elm will bounce back from that no problem. I did have a few spots I needed to fill in with root grafts on mine. I did two a couple of years ago and four more this year.

Yeah I've read a little about that - but not enough try it this time. Will look into it properly for next time if needed 👍🏻 thanks for this!

It's no @markyscott broom - but not too displeased with it so far! Not really sure how it's ended up at that angle (last pic) - assuming I did a dodgy job securing it in the pot last year 😂
