Both dug and potted a couple month ago.

I've dug up Hornbeams.....it seems, at least in my area, that every time the tree pushes buds after the chopping they are nowhere on the upper trunk. For me the trees seems to just push growth from the root base...and oddly only on one side of the tree. I gave up digging them finally.

Is the upper part of the first tree still alive? It looks like the growth is only coming from the base or low on the trunk.

I think so...the top branch is coming out of the top of the trunk on the left side, about 2 inches from the chop. There was a branch growing right from the chop and it grew out all like 6 inches and then one day I came back to the house and it had died. Kinda strange...
