Hello again everyone,

I bought this monster at a nearby nursery for $10. And to be honest, I went at first to look for a Cotoneaster, so shame on me. The tree is about 3 feet tall and has a nice 2 inch plus trunk. It also has a large amount of backbudding going on on the old wood. Which goes against what I have read about these trees. I would like to chop it down low when the right time comes. And sorry for the pictures, it was hard to get a clear one of the trunk through all of that foliage. Comments?

Ryan, Now I expect that some folks here will find fault with this purchase (I've seen it before) but dang I would love to find the same thing around here for ten bucks. Yeah practice tree maybe, but we don't all have fine material readily available. Good luck with it. Let us know all about its progress as time goes by.

I thought it would be a nice practice tree and a main reason I bought it was due to the trunk and of course the price. You can come on by the nursery I got it from, they've got plenty more on sale

I really need to get something to compare the size of the trunk with, it's pretty thick.

There is also a large amount of dead needles, should I remove the dead growth?

I love these trees and want to collect a few one day. It has potential to become alot more impressive than it is now. Depends on what you want to do. I see a deadwood featuve dominated by a new trunk. But my ideas yours and others offer little guidance when it is your bonsai. I personally do this when i find myself at where you are. Treat the tree horticulurally and when the idea hits you, begin to plan your training regiment. Single trunks on this tree look the best IMO but i have seen some doing some gnarly things with heavy twisted upper branches. They are very common in landscaping here. The ones i have noticed slanting have the most character again IMO. Perhaps cleaning the tree up and pruning it to correct or redirect growth would be best to initially put into action.
