So.. Feeding to much is harmfull, feeding not enough is not good either. Clear as crystal!

“Feeding heavily?” Sounds salty, but at what point turns feeding from heavily to to much?

Talking about developmental phase here to be clear. Aiming to beef up the trunk and get elongation.

Example: Young juniper, 25cm square pond basket, akadama/pumice/lava/kuryu mix. Well draining but keeping usefull things inside.

Feeding schedule: mothly 1,5 table spoon organic fertilizer 8-3-9, combined with 1/4 tablespoon chemical fertilizer 12-12-0.

Heavy to the taste or not?

I read some articles about heavy fertilizing which made my own roots shrivel in my pants and my mouth go dry.
Did not want to directly test it on my trees. But I am also not sure if I perhaps already did fed on the heavy side. So there you go.. when are we talking fertilizing heavily?

Note: Netherlands, zone 8, “English summer” so salt should drain down the pipes at the moment at least.

Hey jasper,

So firstly I feel its important to mention I don't use synthetic fertiliser, only organic.

But rather than seeing heavy feed as feed more, I aim to feed more often.

My trees in development have pellets on the surface and are fed at least weekly, with biogold I dissolve in water mixed with biostimulants. As well as 1 foliar feed a week with biostimulants

Please do not confuse more Nitrogen and Nitrogen rich growth with healthy growth, you don't want internodes getting away from you, or the weak elongated cells that high N creates.

I recommend starting with the weakly weekly process. I have bio gold on the soil in net bags but I also use liquid organic fertilizer every week for trees in bonsai soil. Start with half strength every week and monitor results. If you still want to feed heavier keep adjusting your mixture to be a little stronger up to recommended strength on the package.

The only time I had issues with burning is when I eyeballed the measurement of fertilizer to water. don't be a dummy like me

I keep a bottle of foliar feed mixed up but move trees out of full sun when applying it. It's mostly to help along weaker trees that may have had a tough repotting session this spring or are recovering from disease or bug attacks that have now cleared.

I don't think you are feeding too much, but you are not feeding often enough. Suggestion: Divide the amount you feed into two or more portions, then feed every two weeks or weekly.

Just follow the package instructions and feed every 2 weeks to once a month is fine.
