EVERY PLACE seems to advocate one OVER the other.
Does anyone know which is right for this region?

:)

I also trust spring repot but that may just be because that's what I was taught and it works so I'm too chicken to try other options. So far I have not had the real need to try an alternative. I see very experienced and well respected bonsai growers saying Fall is OK too so I must respect that they know.

Must try it out some day to personally prove or disprove.

But can one dead tree a theory prove? ;)

I asked this question to Daisaku Nomoto. His answer was pretty simple: anything is possible at any time with perfect technique and perfect aftercare. Certain times require less perfection. I think this is why you hear professionals in Japan say a fall repot is fine. Why wouldn’t it be, simply apply perfect technique and perfect aftercare!

If you’re going to ground grow a tree, fall planting is just fine, even without perfect aftercare. For repotting from container to container, spring is easier on the tree without having to think much about aftercare. Fall repots can be done, but the timing needs to be considered carefully to ensure the roots have time to recover before winter and protection from the wind and mulching to protect the roots becomes more important.

And just because bonsai is super simple, some species of trees are best done in mid summer like Mugo pine and many tropicals.
