I purchased a European larch last weekend from a big box store. It had started budding out already, so I was able to see where the active buds were. I broke off the top and pruned all branches to 2-3 active buds. My question is about the roots. The plant feels wobbly in the pot, so I assume it was potted up by the nurserymen not too long ago. My question is, how much work can I do to the root ball of this tree this year?

Sorry, not the best photo.

I would repot it but dont root prune unless you have to, just rake out the soil and be gentle to keep the fine roots. especially since its seems to not be root bound

That's what I was thinking. Eliminate the loose soil, then slip pot it into a smaller container, especially since it was heavily pruned.
