I kind of stumbled on this method. A pot of suitable soil and suitable size and a plastic grocery bag. Done. I cut a branch off of a Thunderhead black pine and put the cuttings in this setup a little over a month ago. I mist the cuttings 3-4 times a day and open the bag for a day every few days. The cuttings are all perfectly green and the candles are growing. I should have enough to do some seedling approach grafting in the next couple of years.

Good luck with your pine cuttings. Have you had success with pine cuttings in the past?
I would not be prepping the trees for grafting until you actually have some roots.
Many of my pine cuttings look great for up to 2 years and some even grow new shoots, like these, but no roots.
I think my best result has been around 10% from mature shoots like these ones. Much better root % when using juvenile shoots - when I can get juvenile growth.

First pine tree, first pine cuttings, first time using the mini greenhouse. I might ought to make a trip to the casino. LOL!

Thanks for the heads-up on root-forming timeline. I would have thought top growth = roots.

It's always a good sign but many cuttings can produce shoots, sometimes quite substantial shoots, just from the resources stored in the stems.

Sometimes I get roots in just a few months, sometimes 6 months or so but I've had not rooted cuttings live for more than 2 years before dying with no roots.
The tag shows the cuttings were made Feb 2021. The photo is dated 20 March 2022 so that's close to 14 months. No roots but the cuttings still look happy and healthy. Can't remember if I ended up with any roots from that lot?

Something to look out for, for sure. Thanks.
