At some point in 2024 my partner gave me a pine cone. I collected the seeds and planted them. Currently unsure of species, but likely to be pinus sylvestris or pinus nigra (though they seem different thus far to pinus sylvestris I've germinated this year 2025)

They germinated in June sometime:

8 survived the summer and autumn, an update from January 2025:

Come 24th February 2025 I repotted all 8, cut tap roots of each one and swapped the perlite/potting compost for kaizen #3 and put seperate into 5" terracotta bulb pots:

Cheers, more to follow.

26th July 2025 update:

So they have mostly grown nicely. They never formed candles, just elongated until about May, weve had a very warm dry spring and a colder summer. So in May started a second flush, started elongating again and forming buds/candles. Not really sure what they are doing.

If any one has experience of this odd growth, I would appreciate to know the cause, though it doesn't seem to be a problem for this year.

That's probably all for this year for this batch.

Cheers

Your pine seedlings seem to be doing well.
Seems pretty normal growth for pine seedlings. Juvenile growth phase is quite different from the adult growth that will begin next year or the one after.
Most needles are in 2s. I can see occasional 3s but that's often the case with juvenile growth stages. Both P. nigra and P. sylvestris are 2 needle pines so still wide open for either species.

Thanks.
Once they start forming mature buds I will be able to compare and make a better judgment on species.
