Awesome, they do have great roots almost reminding me of mangroves.

If it were mine, I would chop back to about 1/3, and regrow. Since you are in Florida, your schef will explode with new growth and have a nice crown in no time.

If you do this now you're going to set the tree back a year if you want the roots to get bigger. Letting it just grow for the next couple years will allow to roots to really pack on some bulk. When the time is right you can cut it way back and in just a few months it will be full of foliage again.

Well I do think that root development would be my priority on this particular tree so perhaps I'll just let it grow...

I did pick up another one yesterday and will do the same to it. I love these tropical trees.

Okay, here's an example of what I'm really talking about on my Korean Hornbeam that I got from Ben Griffin:

I use this method a lot on tropicals that grow quickly and are springy. Helps a lot.
