Vertical lower trunk followed by large branches growing up suggests broom as the best style.
It's always best to trim top branches when pruning lower branches. Top grows more and faster. If top is left to grow, lower branches can sometimes stop growing and even die.
I suspect you may need to remove 1 or 2 of the upper branches completely to open the canopy a bit and to fin some harmony in the branching up there. Currently looks like a tangled mass of branches growing all directions.
