Does this count as character or inverse taper?

I vote character? 😃 i think when working with yamadori/yardadori like this material won't always tick all the traditional boxes, also this is a carving project - harry harrington, graham potter and others take huge stumps like this and find the tree "within", often in that spooky/fairytale style. Requires great vision and makita/dremel skills. Check out on YouTube. There may be more root flare under surface which helps balance out also. Finally, people always say it is easy to find, dig and recover privet like this in the UK, but if you have itchy fingers and are willing to exchange some cash to save lots of time and effort, IMO can be worth it.

Oh p.s. if you cannot see in person ask for loads of pics/video all the way round and see if it sparks any ideas for you.

It looks like a ton of fun to work on. I'm guessing it was part of an old hedgerow? You certainly don't find stuff like that over here often!

I think it holds great potential yet not everyone has the skills to find the tree within. But nobody can or should tell you how much it is worth. That is your decision. I personally would love to have it if it was within my budget.

Thanks everyone for your advice!

Fairytale Carving project is exactly what I am looking for going to completely hollow and open the fronts on at least one trunk for sure

@Bonsai Forest i am viewing it in person today and will bring it home with me unless I see anything to put me off

If you don't hear from me tomorrow I was crushed by this thing and died happy :)

Its a pretty huge privet for sale, I am tempted but not sure if its just the size of the thing or if it actually has potential?

Any advice appreciated cos it ain't exactly cheap.
It is definitely something worth working with but whether the prize is fair would depend on size, soil and work done to it. These kinds of privets are fairly common in UK. people will just rip off their edges and leave for the skip often they will be listed on Facebook for free if you go and dig it out yourself. Privets in particular are very hardy and will survive collection pretty much anytime of the year. I dug out 4 like that last year in the middle of the heatwave because a guy decided he wanted to pave his front yard in August. All reduced to stumps and growing nicely this year.
That's not to say to not invest on that one, just be aware of a fair pricing.

This is the smallest trunk but most interesting of the group I dug out. The others where thicker and growing in a clump like the one in your photo

Carving and splitting would be an option to consider. I see based on this one picture already 2 potential trees, depending a whether splitting is a option:

Yes can be a fairytale style tree, I have a thread on this one somewhere. I would go away from the conifer pads on yours

Maybe the equivalent of your Creps, Bougies or Pommys which can be often found growing in yards across the pond, Olives too in Cali.
