I’ve decided to show two trees in early May. I don’t have any stands big enough for a 17”L x 13”D and I don’t want to pay $500. Does anyone have a good source for display stands at reasonable prices?
Also check antique stores, I’ve seen a couple stands chopped down shorter from some type of taller end or display table. They looked ok for a club show.
If you are trying to get under $200, you are probably in DIY territory given the cost of labor. You probably have local woodworkers that might sell you a smaller slab or scrap piece that they would plane smooth for you and then you could add feet for a simple design.
Generally you get what you pay for. eBay can turn up some decent stands. But the size you’re looking for is going to be expensive. 17” width means at least two inches additional width on the stand. Three or four more would be better. Stands that are too small make the tree on them look unstable. So your after 24” or so in length, similar proportion in width.
Lowes has pre-glued project slabs that you can add edges to, stain, and finish with a coat of poly-stain. Then just rig up some legs and you’re done. Very basic woodworking skills.
I’m a stand builder. I have 20 made right now. About to sell at MABS spring fest next week. I have a few large stands that would be less than 500, but not by that much.
