Out walking round loch lomond earlier I found 2 really nice hazel with nice shallow radial roots with a decent girth about 1.5 feet in height. They are both extremely healthy and robust and i was wondering on their suitability as bonsai.

look at the post thread currently running titled Three friends of Winter started by Mike423 here on this forum. There is a fabulous Witch Hazel in that display... Have you tried googleing for images of hazel bonsai? I find that is usually a good place to start.

Hazel and Witch hazel are not the same thing.... however hazel in the contorted varietly "contorted Filbert" or "Harry Lauder's walking stick" can and does make interesting bonsai.... if you were to grow them it would not be for the summer image as their foliage is kind of ugly looking.... the catkin flowers in early spring on males can be very interesting and the contorted images if well maintained make for great winter images....
