What type of pine big box stores generally carry? Do they have bonsai material?

All I see is Mugo and Austrian.

The mugos are started in 3in plugs and take that shape in the roots. Blows.

The Austrian Pines are usually ground grown and
Balled and burlapped in clay. Also Blows.

Best to plant seeds I reckon.

I have seen them a few times, but are almost always expensive and poor quality.

I think it depends on your location.
I see them here at big box stores and and landscape nurseries.
I have not seen any at either that would be suitable for bonsai

I've seen some Thunderhead with really really good looking trunks and nebari at local nurseries. I suppose they could be used to graft normal Japanese black pine back on to them.

Oh joy! A double grafted tree! A JBP seedling, grafted with Thunderhead, grafted with JBP seeding foliage!

There is a JBP on the .99 Cent Bonsai Auction on FB.

I joined the group yesterday. My membership is still pending.
what’s the safe nigh temperature to order bonsai online?
I always wait until nighttime temps are 50+, but they are mostly tropicals...

what do you think about these? He has several listings.

Mikawa are cork bark JBP right?

I would avoid those, they are rather finicky and not as vigorous as regular JBP

I thought "Mikawa " were "regular" Japanese Black Pines, but variety with nicer bark.
As opposed to "Nishiki" Cork Bark varieties.
See https://peterteabonsai.wordpress.com/2011/08/16/mikawa-black-pines/ for a discussion.
Did find a Japanese Black Pine " Monina" at Home Depot from Monrovia and bought it on clearance.
Clearly a graft and not great prospect but it did allow me to practice my JBP techniques until I found some
better material.
In time it took me to post, same link was posted, lol !
Clearly great minds think alike, and so do ours !
