Seedling
Little bit of background:
I bought some dawn redwood seeds from Sheffield online for giggles when we started our tomatoes and peppers this spring and promptly forgot about them. Once I remembered that I had them it was like why wouldn't I see if I can get any of these to sprout. After some research and seeing how many different opinions there are on how to germinate these I figured I would try a couple different options.
4/16 - 24 Hour Soak
4/17 - about half were put onto a paper towel, sprayed with a bit of water, placed in a zip lock, and into the fridge
- the other half were placed in some soil and on a heat mat
5/4 - Half of the seeds in cold stratification were placed on a mix of potting soil, sand from my kids sandbox, and perlite, then some sphagnum moss lightly spread over the seeds. I placed them on the heat mat in shallow trays, and them covered them with cut off water bottles to hold in the moisture
- another group of seeds that were not soaked or stratified were placed on the same soil medium and covered the same way
5/10 - first batch of seeds that were soaked but not stratified were lost to a paw patrol toy turned projectile...
5/13 - two seeds sprouted from the batch that were cold stratified
- no seeds have sprouted from the no prep batch
- I started bonsai about 6 months ago
- The first trees that really grabbed my attention were Dawn Redwood
- I understand that it is recommended not starting from seeds as a beginner because the slow start. I also have gotten an assortment of other trees and saplings to play with, some from arbor day foundation and from jonsteen, and a couple from my local nursery
