Howdy!

Complete bonsai beginner here. I’ve been doing a bunch of initial research, but I figured at some point it’d be best to come to the experts before I take the plunge.
I’m based in CO, and there’s a pear tree outside my house (I believe it’s a chanticleer or a bradford pear) which I’ve been interested in trying to propagate a clipping from. I understand it’ll probably take at least 2-3 years before I can start really shaping it, but seeing as it’s springtime right now I figured it’d be the best time to get a cutting started while I learn more in the meantime.
I have heard that some pears and other deciduous trees can have trouble as bonsai based on their wintering periods, especially with getting the temperature and humidity right. This tree has been thriving outside for many years now though, so I’d hoped it might fare better than other potential starter options.

All that said, I wanted to consult with the experts first before I start gathering materials and actually trying to take a healthy cutting from this guy. Does this seem viable? Am I biting off more than I can chew for a starter project? I’m certain there’s more complications I’m unaware of.

Thanks again for your help :)

Hi!
Welcome to the group. Just gather scissors and water. Looks like other species there too.
