Cutback advice Texas Mountain Laurel

Picked this up today, Sophia secundiflora. Aside from getting rid of the suckers I am debating how far to cut this back. My first thoughts are marked. Is this a reasonable time of year for this?

I agree. The ones down the street planted by the city are probably 25 years old. Maybe a foot in diameter and 15' tall.

Are you sure you want to cut off all the root sprouts? I see a cool little grove. I suggest just letting it grow this year while finding more information on how the species responds to bonsai techniques. Please post what you learn!
