Cut Paste-How long should it stay?

I have a Chinese Elm I purchased a couple of years ago. It had some paste covering where a root had been cut. Today I bumped it when watering and the paste came off. To my surprise it was still somewhat workable but not enough to re-mold and stick back on. Should I replace with new or just leave it open?
