Is the twin-leader type of growth common? All the literature I found thus far regarding apices recommends chopping the terminal end and wiring up a new eventual leader for tapering… but this tree is two parallel leaders side by side. Is this advantageous?

How low does the split accur?
I ask for the sake of esthetics. splits toward the top of the tree are common in nature, but are USUALLY less desirable in bonsai.

Definitely up to you on design. I would at least shorten one, and have a dominate trunk.

The split occurs roughly 1.5’ inferior to the terminal end. Ahh, both can be utilized, but only one as the dominant. I plan to structural prune late Summer/early Fall. I’ll reduce one of them. They appear equal in width and density of foliage. I don’t suppose it makes a difference which one.

Thank you!

Sounds like a plan!
I look forward to seeing its transformation.
