All,

Starting a thread on this one. Another Ponderosa Pine collected in Spring of '21 in the Cascades. This one is particularly large, looking forward to its development. Will let it grow untouched at least another season.

Collected from rock and potted in pure pumice.

Cheers

Best idea to let grow at least one season. Likely would suggest 2-3 years unchecked growth as foliage very sparse and much needed☺️.

Looks promising!
I wonder if that straight exposed section in the middle eventually could be bent? Either way, a fun design challenge

Update :

I haven't done anything with this tree since it was collected a little over 4 years ago. I did have it growing at the desired planting angle over that time, so I was hopeful there would be more advantageous root growth when it came time to repot. It also survived a cross country move from the Seattle area to New Hampshire.

Repot went better than expected, especially doing it by myself, with plenty of new strong growth under the trunk. Planted in a cheap terracotta for now while it fills out again.

Overall pretty happy with the end result. Will try and get better photos when I can.

Here's a couple photos of my two Ponderosa Pines in the back of the uhaul. 10 days, 3400 miles, and a pile of family memories later... They made it. Very impressed by how resilient these trees can be.

Interesting note : this trip was in the middle of August and these trees had next year's buds already set. Given they were in summer dormancy during this time, after being exposed to the prolonged darkness in the trailer, they actually started opening those buds in the fall. Luckily there was enough time for them to set new buds again before winter, but I found that very fascinating.
