I got this coastal redwood from a Cali vendor a couple months ago. It’s under a 70% shade cloth. It’s doing great and sending out lots of new growth. When or how often do you pinch this species?
It has a gnarly hollow and lots of the wood is soft and punky. I began to scrape some of it back but noticed what appeared to be buds coming thru or maybe even small roots out of the trunk growing into the punk wood. Should I continue on cleaning out the soft punk out of the hollow like any other tree or what would you do?

It seems the apex is turning brown and hardening off. My plan was to just care for the tree, learn how to keep it happy and learn all I can about it before I start pinching back buds or pruning anything.. but I also understand how aggressive growth can be and how quickly they can get out of hand so I don’t want to do that. Thanks in advance. Attached many photos

If you have your branches set and you're working on ramification and getting your foliage tight, then you pinch new growth all through the growing season. Take it back to the closest branch point, then pinch our the tip of all new growth.

Thanks! Is there a window of time at the end of its growing season when I should stop? For example, should I not pinch anymore after September? Or pinch everything back until the tree just stops sending out growth for pinching?

The latter. I was pinching every day from March to October.
