Searching through old posts I see at least a few other members in NYC. Are there any local clubs or meetups?

I’ve been learning from books and the internet for several years but there’s no substitute for in-person discussion and seeing trees up close.

I also have an excess of seedlings and cuttings I’d love to give or trade to a good home.

there seem to be a few, since I am the other side of the pond I can vouch for any of them. I would try lessons with http://www.internationalbonsai.com/bonsai-classes the owner Mr William N. Valavanis is a well respected bonsaist with a wealth of knowledge and experience and is held in high esteem globally. He is also a member on this forum.

You might email or call the Brooklyn Botantic Garden and ask about local clubs. They have a pretty decent bonsai collection and they used to have a club (still might) that met on the first Thursday of the month at the facility (quick search brought up REddit posts on it six years ago)..

This are great, but Bill Valavanis is in Rochester or near there. That is about a five hour drive (over 300 miles) from NYC.

Thank you for pointing that out Rockm my american geography is poor, keep forgetting things in the same state or county can be multiple hours away in a car. not like here were my whole county has a area of 477 sq mi and about 7 different accents.

New York is a deceptively large state. It is about 55,000 square miles of territory. England has about 50,000.

Yeah, Rochester is a bit far :) But the two on Long Island aren't unreasonable, about an hour drive from the city (without traffic).

I'll see what I can find out from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. I'm already a member there and I go there almost every week. I think there are some special challenges to growing in the city (wind, small spaces) so it would be great to trade information and ideas with people who are in the same boat.

I'm also in NYC, have you had any luck?

I sent a note to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden help line. If I learn anything interesting I'll post it here. If they don't have anything going on I'd be willing to organize some kind of meetup in Brooklyn this summer or fall.

Anyone else in NYC who would be interested in a meetup in Brooklyn?

Ok cool, thanks for replying!

I'd be game for a meetup, but to be honest I don't have much to bring to the table, lol. I'm still incredibly new and don't really know my ass from a hole in the ground (in fairness, that's no different than normal for me).
