I rarely grow anything from seed, because I feel seedlings will be in perpetual pre-bonsai status with me. That being said, I wanted to give a unique tree a chance. This is a Ceiba, and the idea for growing one came from the outstanding example at Longwood Gardens, which is 10 minutes from me (I believe that tree is going to be removed in the new renovations unfortunately). This was the only seed of a group that germinated, so I'm planning to just grow this out for the next 10 years or so to develop a trunk that will actually be in proportion to the leaves.

Which species? What did you do to germinate it?

I tried 2 pentandra in the fall but neither germinated. I've got a half dozen seed left that I was going to try in the spring.

This is pentranda. I soaked 10 seeds for a few days and then planted under grow lights without bottom heat. I used a fairly rich potting soil, and had one successful germination

Nice! There is a 400 year old one on Vieques island (P.R.). I used to drive by it on occasion. It's worth a google search; it's spectacular!

They are all over the island in Puerto Rico, the one in Vieques is one of the oldest and well known because of Vieques been a well known tourist location.
